Two Rock Reminders July 10, 2008

First: The new Melvins disc dropped this week, and it is a big fat pile of pure awesomesauce slathered on a bun of ass-kickery holding a burger of devil-horned mayhem.* It’s called Nude With Boots, and I can already tell it’s going to be the album of what remains of my summer. It’s their second collaboration with the dudes from Big Business, making for a unique two-drummer, guitar and bass line-up – a feat in itself, because they’ve gone through more bass players than Spinal Tap has drummers. This time around The Melvins up the basic 70s rock strand of their musical DNA to Houses Of The Holy-type levels, pummelling everything around them into dust. Of course, being The Melvins, they take a couple of head-scratching detours, like the bizarre cover of “Deus Iraea” (aka the theme song to “The Shining”). I was reading an interview with one of the guys from Comets On Fire who was saying that he wanted to bring back the era of rock where it sounded like the bands were climbing a mountain to the sky and bringing back the mystic rock of the universe with them. Well look no further, fellow rock fiends.
Second: Tonight, the mighty Ace Kinkaid storm the gates of The Starlight to play for a bunch of jaded Waterloo hipsters. They’re opening for Jen Militia and What’s He Building In There?, who I believe are a Scarlett Johanssen cover band. I KID, I KID – they are, of course, K-Dub’s most awesome metal export and Colin Hunter’s personal pick-to-click. Will the combination of Ace Kinkaid and WHBIT? be the loudest act in Starlight history? Will Liam’s arms fall off after performing two sets with two different bands on the same night? Will the sheer power of the rock cause Satan himself to rise from the stage and lay waste to The Silver Spur? It’ll only cost you a measley $8 bucks to find out.

Jaded Waterloo hipsters? Good that means you’ll be there *snap!*
I’m expecting a full show review write-up/blog post, Sloth.
Wasn’t Vanity Chung one of Prince’s back-up singers circa 1985?
1. Melvins rule
2. Ace Kincaid kicked ASS at the Starlight last night! Who would have thought an acoustic klezmer band could win over so many metal fans?
Very nice!!
